Interstate Medicaid Planning

Moving states? Your Medicaid doesn't follow you.

Medicaid is a state-run program. When you move, your coverage stops. You must apply all over again in your new state — and that means a new eligibility review, new asset limits, and a new look-back clock. Get this wrong and you could face months without coverage or a long disqualification period.

What You Need to Know Before You Move

⚠️

Medicaid is not portable

There is no nationwide Medicaid card. Each state has its own program, its own rules, and its own income and asset limits. Moving means starting over.

The 5-year look-back still applies

Your new state will review the same 5-year window of asset transfers. Gifts or transfers made before your move can trigger a disqualification period in the new state.

🏥

Nursing home coverage can stop immediately

If a loved one is in a nursing home and you move them to another state, Medicaid coverage stops on the day they leave. The new state application must be in process.

📋

MAGI vs. LTSS Medicaid are different

Standard health coverage Medicaid (MAGI) is easier to transfer. Long-term care Medicaid (nursing homes, home care) has stricter rules and requires a full new application.

🏠

Your home may be treated differently

Some states have stricter home equity limits than others. The home you own in your old state may count against you in a new state's Medicaid calculation.

📅

Timing is everything

The order of events matters enormously — when you terminate coverage, when you establish residency, and when you apply in the new state can affect your eligibility.

Find Your Specific Move

Each state pairing has different rules, different income limits, and different strategies. Select your move to get state-specific guidance.
